San Jose, CA
San Jose is a city at the seat of Santa Clara County located in west-central California, United States. It is located in the Santa Clara Valley along Coyote Creek and the Guadalupe River. It is about 50 miles southeast of San Francisco and southeast of San Francisco Bay. San Jose sprawls over a broad floodplain and gradually slopes upward toward more rugged terrain to the east and south. San Jose is known for its sunny and mild weather and has a semi-arid climate.
San Jose, the third-largest city in California, is also the most populous component of the extensive metropolitan area around the bay that includes Oakland and San Francisco. Neighboring communities of San Jose include Milpitas, located to the northeast, Alum Rock, located to the east, Los Gatos, located to the southwest, Campbell and Santa Clara, both located to the west, and Sunnyvale, situated to the northwest. San Jose constitutes the hub of Silicon Valley, which is the region known for its high-technology and computer-related industries. The total area of San Jose is 178 square miles. Its population according to the 2020 census is 1,013,240.
The economy in San Jose is focused on high technology. In particular, computer hardware design and manufacturing, software production, and internet concerns are the major industries. Electronic equipment like semiconductors or scientific instruments is also produced here and industrial machinery. Business services such as health care providers or engineering firms remain an important economic factor to this day, given their close proximity to Silicon Valley’s downtown area where they can be found in abundance. Agriculture remains a significant industry here. Major crops in the region include greenhouse plants, cut flowers, mushrooms and fruit trees (notably wine grapes, cherries, peppers, and tomatoes). Beef cattle are also raised here.
The city is home to San Jose State University and San Jose City College. Santa Clara and Stanford University are nearby. Notable museums in San Jose include the San Jose Museum of Art and the Tech Museum of Innovation. Rosicrucian Park is also famous and has a museum of Egyptian antiquities, a planetarium, and a science center. The Winchester Mystery House is a popular San Jose attraction. It is a 160-room Victorian mansion filled with unusual architectural features. It was under construction continuously between 1884 and 1922 by the eccentric widow Sarah Winchester, who was heir to the fortune of the firearms-manufacturing company. It is maintained today as a museum and offers daily tours.
San Jose has an extensive system of municipal and regional parks. Kelley Park includes a zoo, a Japanese garden, and an outdoor historic museum of restored and replicated buildings from San Jose’s early years. On the city’s eastern edge, the 720-acre Alum Rock Park is California’s oldest municipal park. San Jose is home to the Bay Area’s professional ice hockey team, the Sharks. Several state parks are located in the vicinity, including Henry W. Coe and Big Basin Redwoods. Lick Observatory is located on Mount Hamilton, which is about 15 miles east of the city.
