San Francisco is a major city located in the state of California, found in the center of the bay on the Pacific Ocean. The city is known for its rolling hills, trolley cars, Victorian architecture, beautiful scenery, fog, and its rich history as well as its ethnic and cultural diversity. According to the United States census, the population of San Francisco is 874,961 as of 2019. San Francisco has a total area of approximately 47.9 square miles and is built on over 50 hills. It is the 17th most populous city in the United States and the fourth most populous city in California. The city was founded on June 29, 1776 by Spanish colonists who named it after the Catholic Saint Francis of Assisi. The California Gold Rush of 1849 made San Francisco a very popular city to migrate to. Three quarters of the city was burned down and destroyed by the 1906 earthquake and fire.

The city has major music venues, which include the Great American Music Hall, the Independent, the Fillmore, the Chapel, Slim’s, and the Warfield. The popular music festival Outside Lands puts on its annual event in Golden Gate Park every summer. Treasure Island music festival is also a popular event.
