Palo Alto, CA
Palo Alto is a city located in the northwest corner of Santa Clara County, California and in the San Francisco Bay Area. It takes its name from El Palo Alto which means “tall stick.” According to the United States Census Bureau, Palo Alto has a total area of 25.8 square miles. The official elevation of Palo Alto is 30 feet. The city’s boundaries reach far into the northern section of the Santa Cruz Mountains.
Palo Alto, California was founded by Leland Stanford when he called for the formation of an institution in memory of his son and thus established Stanford University. The city is bordered by East Palo Alto, Mountain View, Los Altos Hills, Portola Valley and Menlo Park. It has a population of 68,572 at the 2020 census.

One of the best ways to see Palo Alto is to walk or bike along El Camino Real. This historic road was formally a part of Highway 101 and Highway 85. The route through Palo Alto offers some spectacular views of Stanford University and other nearby landmarks.
