Palo Alto is a city located in the northwest corner of Santa Clara County, California and in the San Francisco Bay Area. It takes its name from El Palo Alto which means “tall stick.” According to the United States Census Bureau, Palo Alto has a total area of 25.8 square miles. The official elevation of Palo Alto is 30 feet. The city’s boundaries reach far into the northern section of the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Palo Alto, California was founded by Leland Stanford when he called for the formation of an institution in memory of his son and thus established Stanford University. The city is bordered by East Palo Alto, Mountain View, Los Altos Hills, Portola Valley and Menlo Park. It has a population of 68,572 at the 2020 census.

The racial makeup of Palo Alto is 41,359 (64.2%) White, 17,461 (27.1%) Asian, 1,197 (1.9%) African American, 121 (0.2%) Native American, 142 (0.2%) Pacific Islander, 1,426 (2.2%) from other races, and 2,697 (4.2%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race are 3,974 persons (6.2%), according to the 2010 census.

Palo Alto is a principal city of Silicon Valley. It is headquarters to a number of high-technology companies, including Skype, Houzz, Hewlett-Packard (HP), Space Systems/Loral, PARC, IDEO, VMware, Ford Research and Innovation Center, and Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center. Palo Alto has also served as headquarters to several other prominent high-technology companies, including Apple, Google, Facebook, Logitech, Intuit, Pinterest, and PayPal. Palo Alto is high on the list as one of the most expensive cities to live in, and its residents are some of the more educated individuals in America.

Palo Alto’s retail and restaurant attractions include Stanford Shopping Center, and downtown Palo Alto, centered on University Avenue. Palo Alto is the location of the first Apple Store, the first Apple mini store, the first West Coast Whole Foods Market, and the first Victoria’s Secret.

Palo Alto is rich in culture, dining, shopping, and entertainment opportunities.  Stanford University is home to a number of stunning buildings, including the Stanford Memorial Church. The church was dedicated in 1893 and features Romanesque Revival architecture. Stanford Memorial Church is located on Stanford’s main quad in the heart of Stanford University’s campus. One of the best ways to see Palo Alto is to walk or bike along El Camino Real. This historic road was formally a part of Highway 101 and Highway 85. The route through Palo Alto offers some spectacular views of Stanford University and other nearby landmarks.

The weather in Palo Alto is milder than most coastal cities in the United States. The average temperature year-round is 59 degrees Fahrenheit. Palo Alto also has a dry climate, with just a little over 15 inches of rainfall each year. This makes Palo Alto a perfect place to go for those looking to avoid rain and snow.
